SRS Bermuda Helps Preserve Bermuda’s Unique Ecosystems with the Trunk Island Project

SRS Bermuda proudly contributed to the Trunk Island Project, a conservation and education initiative known as a “living classroom.” This project is carried out in partnership with the Bermuda Zoological Society and the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo, both of which are dedicated to preserving Bermuda’s unique ecosystems. As a registered Bermuda charity, this initiative plays a vital role in environmental education and sustainability for the surrounding community.

Trunk Island, the largest island in Harrington Sound, spans seven acres and is considered an ecological treasure due to its diverse habitats. The Bermuda Zoological Society has been actively working on conservation and education programs on the island since 2006. Harrington Sound, often mistaken for a lake, is actually an inland body of water fed by the ocean through Flatt’s Inlet and underwater caves, making it a unique marine environment.

The geography of Trunk Island has changed significantly over millennia, evolving from a cedar-forested hill into its current form due to rising sea levels. In the past, the island was extensively used for tobacco farming, which unfortunately led to significant habitat destruction. However, conservation and restoration efforts have been ongoing since the 17th century, working to repair the damage and restore native plant species.

Today, Trunk Island serves as an essential educational hub, offering students, researchers, and conservationists hands-on learning experiences about Bermuda’s ecosystems. Key initiatives on the island include mangrove restoration and micro forest planting, which support native plant life and help combat global warming. By participating in the Trunk Island Project, SRS Bermuda is contributing to the preservation of Bermuda’s natural heritage and helping to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Way to go team!
